Creating Your First Amazon Listing

creating your first amazon listing

When you are a new seller on Amazon, creating your first listing can be quite a daunting task, but Amazon Marketing is a skill you need to learn to find success in selling on Amazon. We have compiled a list of all the things that you should be doing to make the whole process easier for you!

Creating a listing on Amazon can be broken down into 4 sections: Market/Competitor Research, Keyword Research, Listing Copy, and Graphic Design. Getting these steps right is the key to a successful listing that generates a good amount of sales.

Market/Competitor Research

This is the first step of creating a product listing on Amazon. What is happening in the market, and what are your competitors doing? In this step, you will search on Amazon for some phrases most relevant to your product. Using the Helium10 Chrome extension, you can use Xray to see how the listings are performing. By sorting the list by sales volume, you can see which ASINs are the top sellers. You will then take these ASINs into Helium10’s Cerebro for the keyword research stage.

Take some time to look over the best sellers that you have identified. What are their listings like? How do they structure their titles? What images are they using? Are there specific points that they focus on throughout their listing? You can take this information and base your own listing around some key points you find and improve on things where you can.

You can also look over the reviews to see what customers like and dislike about the product. This could give you some very good points to focus on for your listing. If there is something that the customers like you should include that in your listing and if there is something that they don’t like, you can focus on making sure your product meets these needs.

Keyword Research

In this stage of creating a listing, you will take some of the information from the competitor research section (the ASINs that you copied into Cerebro) to find what keywords your competitors are using. Cerebro helps you to know exactly what keywords an ASIN is ranking for both organically and through sponsored ads (PPC). You should look to focus on high search volume keywords with little competition. These will bring you the best results. You should also focus on long tail keywords as people searching for these terms are more likely to buy your product and they are less competitive.

You will also use Helium10’s Magnet keyword research tool. Here, you will type in one phrase related to your product. Magnet will then return you a massive list of similar phrases! We like to sort the list by search volume and filter out phrases with fewer than 250 monthly searches. This amount will always depend on how big the niche is.

Once you have created a big list of keywords, you will be ready for the copywriting stage!

Copywriting

Now is when you get your hands dirty and combine all the information you have gathered so far! Take your keywords and use them to create a title, 5 bullet points, and a description that will explain to potential customers what your product is and why they should buy it. Remember how your competitors structured their listings and use this to create an excellent SEO-optimized product listing. The text in your listing should be filled with keywords, ensuring that it shows up for many searches.

Your title is the most critical keyword area, so make sure you put your most relevant and highest search volume phrases here. The bullet points are excellent for giving a potential client more information on the product. Use them to showcase the main features. The description can be used to tell a customer of any additional use cases for the product. You should even fill the alt text of your images with keywords that you didn’t get to include anywhere else in the listing.

Graphic Design

Your main image is one of the most important things to draw customers to your listing page and make them purchase your product. You need to make your product stand out from hundreds of others that may be exactly like it. Do this by using colors and product packaging in the main image. The customer should be able to see what the product does with just one single glance. Having a great main image is one of the best ways to get more people to click on your product and having good secondary images is an essential factor for getting people to purchase your product.

You have now created a listing that will hopefully start ranking for your relevant keywords and generating sales! Well done! Always remember that on Amazon, you must constantly optimize your listing to stay ahead of the competition. Good luck on your selling journey!
